The microphone does not work
About 99% of the problems found when recording are due to an incorrect configuration of the microphone control in Windows, or to an incorrect connection of the cable to the Sound Board. Many of the less well known PC brands come with an incorrect microphone setting. Fortunately, there is a simple solution.

Solution:

1. Make sure the microphone is attached to the "mic" connection of the Sound Board.

2. Load the program "Volume Control" (in Windows 95, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Multimedia; in Windows 98 or 2000 go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment).

3. Inside the program "Volume Control", select "Options > Properties". Select "Recording". Make sure the “Microphone” option is selected. Click on the [Accept] button. Increase the volume control of the "microphone" or "mic". After following these steps, you should be able to record your voice. If you continue having problems while recording, go to step #2 and modify the "mic" or "microphone" control to the "other" option.
If after following the abovementioned steps, you still have recording problems, please determine if the problem is related to The English Teacher or to Windows:

1.
Close The English Teacher (if it was open).

2. Try to record your voice using a program called "Sound recorder", which is the standard recording program in Windows (in Windows 95, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Multimedia; in Windows 98 or 2000 go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment).

If you cannot hear your recording, the problem is located in the way Windows has been configured, or in the Sound Board. Contact your PC’s manufacturer to get help.
The computer takes too long extracting sound from the CDROM
If you have The English Teacher CD-ROM, the sounds not located in your hard disk drive are extracted from the CD-ROM. It may occur that the time it takes from the moment you request the pronunciation of a word until you hear it, is too long. This may be caused by one of the following reasons:

1. Your CD-ROM unit takes too long to speed up sufficiently to begin the transfer of the information requested. Specifically, some high-speed units need several seconds to reach the high rotational speed necessary to begin the transfer of data. If your CD-ROM unit has this problem, you should be able to listen rapidly to the pronunciation of any word once this high rotational speed is reached. After some seconds of inactivity, the CD-ROM stops rotating, and the sound of the next requested word will again take a few seconds to be heard.

2. The CD-ROM has some dirt in the central ring where the CD-ROM unit contacts the CD.

3. The CD-ROM is scratched or damaged.

4. Your CD-ROM unit is malfunctioning.

Recommended Solution: Try to copy all the multimedia files from the CD-ROM to your Hard Disk. Instructions:

* If your Hard Disk has more than 600MBytes (0.6 GBytes) of free space, copy the folders named "Movies" and "Sound" from the CD-ROM to the folder where you installed The English Teacher (normally "C:\Program files\Opus Educational Software\The English Teacher")

The English Teacher screen looks bad
Solution:
Make sure the screen resolution is at least 800X600 (800 points or horizontal pixels X 600 vertical), and that video color has at least 256 colors.

1. From "My Computer" ("Mi computadora"), double click to "Control Panel" ("Panel de Control").

2. Double click on the “Display” icon ("Pantalla").

3. Click on "Settings" ("Parámetros”).

4. Make sure the following two things are set as follows:
* Screen resolution is at least 800X600
* Colors must be 256 or more ("High Color" preferable).

5. Click on the "Accept" or ("OK") button.
